Abstract (English)

Economic diplomacy, as one of the most important instruments of foreign policy, plays a key role in linking national interests with regional and global economic structures. Following the political developments of 2021 in Afghanistan, the country’s foreign policy underwent fundamental changes, shifting from a foreign aid–dependent model toward an economy- oriented approach based on regional engagement. Afghanistan’s geo-economic position at the crossroads of Central Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East, along with its transit potential and natural resources, has created significant opportunities for the application of economic diplomacy. Accordingly, this study aims to examine the status of economic diplomacy in Afghanistan’s foreign policy during the period 2021–2026. The main research question asks what role economic diplomacy has played in Afghanistan’s foreign policy during this period. This research is descriptive–analytical in nature, and its data have been collected through library sources, documentary materials, and content analysis of official reports and studies. The findings indicate that economic diplomacy has shifted from a marginal position to a central pillar in Afghanistan’s foreign policy and has become a key instrument of interaction with the regional environment. The development of transit corridors such as Chabahar, TAPI, and CASA-1000, the expansion of trade cooperation with neighboring countries, and efforts to attract foreign investment in mining and infrastructure sectors are among the most important manifestations of this approach. However, challenges such as lack of international recognition, banking restrictions, and dependence on raw material exports have limited the full utilization of available capacities. The results show that economic diplomacy in the studied period has emerged as a major variable in Afghanistan’s regional and international engagement.
